Blue Derby MTB trails - find your way to get riding in Derby

Access to the Blue Derby trail network is straight forward from River Cabins Derby. The trailhead is a flat one/two minute ride from the cabins via the path opposite the driveway (turn right).

To get started and find your way around the network of trails here there is a large trail map on the way to the trailhead, near the bike wash. This shows not only individual trails with a colour rating and approx time to ride but also suggests some ways to link together combinations of trails to make a longer ride.

An online version of these maps are located on the Blue Derby website

All the trails are clearly marked with distinctive signage that shows the trail name and the grading of the trail. Getting lost is possible of course, but it is difficult when the trails are as well marked as they are here.

We always recommend starting with a warm-up run on a trail that is easier than your maximum abilities. To ensure you get the best out of your visit always ride on trails that are suitable for your level of riding. It’s better to call last run early in the day and enjoy a cold drink than to fall victim to the dreaded “one more run” curse…

There are many classic trails that can be linked together into an hour, half day or even full day out on the bike. Depending on your abilities (and fitness) it is possible to ride for a whole weekend and not ride the same trail twice. However its often fun to ride the same trail a few times and really get the hang of it! Some trails in the blue and black category become even more fun when you know what’s on the otherside of that jump or roll-over.

.Another great way to find your way around the trails is with a Blue Derby trail maps (mankies). These items are available from every shop in town. They cost only $20 and $18 of that goes back to trail maintenance to keep the trails running great for your next visit.

While it is possible to ride up the hill to access all the trails in Derby, the best option is to book a seat with one of the great shuttle operators in town. This will not only save some of your energy for getting back down but also give you access to a wealth of local knowledge on the trails and their current condition.

These can be booked from a single drop-off to a full day of adventure.

Shuttles leave from the trailhead area and drop you at the spot called Black Stump. This is the starting point for many trails that come back down to the trailhead, and a few that climb up above start higher up the hill.

Before leaving you at this point make sure you ask for a suggestion from the shuttle driver based on your abilities and those of your group. All the drivers are super friendly and of course they are riders themselves so always happy to share their knowledge of the extensive Blue Derby trail network.

No matter what your abilities are on the bike there is a Blue Derby trail that is perfect for your next adventure.
