Tips on packing your MTB

Travelling with a bike might sounds like a hassle, but it doesn’t need to be. A quick check of the web will find a host of great bags and boxes that are suitable for the task of flying to Launceston.

When packing your bike we recommend the following simple tips:

  • Always remove your rear derailleur from the hanger - this will prevent the hanger getting bent. A bent hanger will affect your shifting, and although they can be straightened, a once bent a hanger will never be as strong again.

  • Ensure any items you place inside the bag can’t move around and damage the bike. Many baggage handlers will place bags upside down to ensure they don’t move around when loading.

  • Remove rotors from wheels and place in a protected part of the bag. A bent rotor can ruin your first day riding.

  • Remove pedals before taking your wheels off - and don’t forget to pack them.

  • Place all the tools you use to pack your bag inside the bag - a side pocket is great for this. That way you won’t forget to bring them with you.

  • Remove some air from the tyres but not all - deflating them completely might result in any sealant inside drying out.

  • Ensure the chain is secured with either a dedicated chain holder or the part of the bag designed for this purpose

  • Always check the area you have used to pack the bike for bits you should be taking with you

Follow these simple tips and you’ll be rolling out the door on your first day and hitting the trails with a big smile on your face.
