The easiest (and most beautiful) trail in Derby - an introduction to MTB
/The Valley Pond trail is the best MTB trail in Derby to start on if you are a beginner, novice or just want to ease into riding in Derby.
It’s also probably the best kids trail anywhere in the country, with plenty to see and do as you make your way back to Derby from Branxholm.
At just over 9km the trail is fun but mostly importantly for those who are starting out it introduces some trail features that you will find on other parts of the Blue Derby trail network, such as berms, rollers and shallow river crossings.
To get to the start you can either book a shuttle with one of our local operators (see links at bottom of the post), self-shuttle (two cars needed) or the trail can be ridden in both directions.
As you get used to your bike, and riding on dirt, your confidence will improve and you might feel ready to head out onto some of the more challenging trails around Derby.
From its starting point in Branxholm the Valley Pond trail winds its way (mostly) downwards through a landscape dotted with large tree ferns, blackwood and myrtles forest. The the Valley Pond itself, which is roughly half way along the ride back to your accommodation in Derby there is a picnic table from platypus are often seen in the pond which is close-by.
